INEOS Must Sell Underperforming Man Utd Defender Earning More Than Garnacho
Just over a week after Manchester United’s derby victory at the Etihad, new manager Ruben Amorim is facing the stark reality of the challenge ahead. The Red Devils have struggled for consistency, as evidenced by their recent losses to Tottenham and Bournemouth.
There are several issues for Amorim to address, including Marcus Rashford’s future and improving the team’s attacking output. However, fixing the defense is a key priority, with United conceding the second-most set-piece goals in the Premier League this season.
To make room for new signings that fit his tactical approach, Amorim needs to offload some underperforming players. While high-earners like Casemiro and Antony may be difficult to move, one player who should be sold is left-back Tyrell Malacia.
The Dutch defender has endured a difficult time since joining from Feyenoord in 2022. After missing all of last season through injury, Malacia has struggled in his limited appearances this term. He was substituted at halftime in three of his five outings, including the recent loss to Bournemouth where he was at fault for the opening goal.
Despite earning £75,000 per week – £25,000 more than the promising Alejandro Garnacho – Malacia has failed to make an impact as a wing-back in Amorim’s system. His poor performances and lack of availability make him an ideal candidate to be moved on in January.
For INEOS and the new United management, selling Malacia should be a priority in order to bring in a more suitable replacement at left-back. With just days left in 2024, it would be surprising to see the Dutch defender feature for United again.
